MY CURRENT ART PRACTICE

I’ve been a poet and spoken word artist for (at time of writing) the last 4 years.

Over the years, I’ve performed on the open mic circuit in London, headlined events including Jazz Verse Jukebox and Walthamstow Garden Party, and have been commissioned by institutions such as Barbican Centre and BBC Bitesize.

I’ve also taken part in poetry programmes in order to develop my writing and meet other poets. Programmes include Arvon where our group was tutored by Yomi Sode and Catherine Smith, Barbican Young Poets with Jacob Sam-La Rose and Rachel Long, and the Writing Room by Apples and Snakes with guest tutors including Bohdan Piasecki and Paula Varjack.

In 2019 I was one of the top six finalists for BBC 1Xtra’s Words First programme.

I have strong writing and public speaking skills, as I could clearly deliver text to the stage. However, I wanted to develop my acting as I was weaker at working with text that I didn’t write and with utilising movement in my performance.

MY NEW ART FORM

My plan for my new skill is acting as this has been an art form I’ve wanted to explore for a long time. This will influence my main practice improving my ability to perform live and bring text alive. It will also help me develop my storytelling skills, stage presence and how to convey emotions from the page to the stage.

EVIDENCE OF WORKING WITH A PRACTITIONER EXPERIENCED WITHIN THE NEW ART FORM

I was accepted onto New Earth’s Actors Academy (formerly Yellow Earth) where we worked with Dadiow Lin. She is a theatre director and ran sessions with us once a week for 5 weeks on working with text as actors. We also got to work with her one to one in preparation for our showcase on 7 August 2020.

NEW WORK, EVIDENCE OF SHARING AND FEEDBACK

On 7 August 2020, New Earth held its Actors showcase event over Zoom. Myself and Ainsleigh Barber, a fellow academy participant, had worked on a scene from the play ‘Top Girls’ by Caryl Churchill throughout the programme. At the event, we performed our scene live to an audience.

A recording of the performance can be found below:

FINAL REVIEW

Overall, this experience has greatly improved my confidence and expanded my skills. I have more awareness and knowledge of the creative industry, particularly in the theatre world, and how it is structured.

I’ve also been able to work alongside other actors, which has been valuable as previously my performance has mostly been solo work. I’ve gained the ability to play parts and be in a scene with another person.

It was useful to work with text that I didn’t write as I’ve since learnt to pay closer attention to text and how to translate that into performance. I also got to learn different acting techniques such as the Meisner technique, and differences between acting for stage and screen.

This experience has informed my main practice as I now have more tools to help me utilise movement and voice when performing poetry, and how to consider expression, pitch and emotions on stage. I’ve also learned about using inner thought processes and being present in order to deliver a stronger performance, as well as performing with cameras so it can open new avenues for me with performing poetry.
