EVIDENCE OF RESEARCH INTO OPPORTUNITIES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ARTS

New Earth Actors Academy

I was recommended to look into New Earth Theatre Academy through Sour Lemons. I went onto their website and signed up to their email newsletter to receive news about any opportunities. When I was notified their Actors Academy was opening for applications again, I took up the opportunity and was accepted.

National Youth Theatre

I was encouraged to audition for the National Youth Theatre (NYT) by my peers. After researching into the process, I auditioned and was accepted.

Other Opportunities

I came across other opportunities to participate in the arts through social media and email newsletters I signed up for:

  • I took part in a movement workshop run by the Pappy Show through a recommendation by one of the Sour Lemon participants.
  • I was forwarded PaperGang Theatre’s ImagiNation project.
  • I took part in the East Asian Theatremakers discussion groups.

A DESCRIPTION OF WHAT THEY DID ON THEIR PLACEMENT/VOLUNTEERING/TRAINING/WORKSHOPS

I have been taking part in workshops to develop my skills

With New Earth Actors Academy, we covered a lot of different areas with acting through multiple tutors. We did text work where we learnt to take a script and build character and story from what we were given. Through movement and improvisation workshops, we learnt to use the whole body as part of our craft and to trust our instincts. In an acting for the camera workshop, we were guided through self-taping and using the limited screen space to our advantage.

We also had the opportunity to practise the basics of the Meisner technique, a method of acting developed by Sanford Meisner with the focus for the actor to “get out of their head”. Our group received voice work sessions, where we were able to develop vocal exercises and techniques to help our performance. There were also lunchtime talks held with industry practitioners where we were given an overview of actors’ experiences, the casting industry and what theatre producers do.

During the academy, we were working towards a final showcase where we played a scene with another participant to an audience over Zoom.

REFLECTION ON HOW THEIR EXPERIENCES HAVE SUPPORTED THEIR LEARNING AND ARTS DEVELOPMENT

The workshops with New Earth have helped me by building numerous skills. I have learnt to work with text written by someone else in order to bring it to life off the page. I have also gained a better understanding about the acting industry having learnt how it’s structured, how processes such as casting and production flow and what corporations are out there. I’ve been able to connect with industry practitioners and other emerging actors in order to build a community and network for myself. I’ve also developed a lot of confidence in my abilities through the workshops, having learnt to trust myself and use intentions and feelings to create a believable performance.

These experiences will inform my practice and main art form by improving both my performance and my writing. It’s helped me gain a deeper understanding of how text can be read and therefore what I need to consider when writing to ensure my intentions are articulated. It has also helped me with the performance side of spoken word as I have learnt how to deepen the internal work and inner thought processes when performing to deliver a stronger performance. Additionally, I’ve learnt movement and voice exercises that I can use in order to strengthen my delivery and help with stamina and recovery post-performance
